The forest lies between Minas Tirith and the Rohan border, on the northern slopes of the Ered Nimrais and just south of the road the Riders of Rohan used on their march east. The beacon of Amon Dîn stands above it, and the Stonewain Valley cuts through the hills behind it.
The Drúedain who lived there were a separate people from both Rohirrim and Gondorians, small, wary and skilled trackers, and the Rohirrim had long hunted them as beasts. When Mordor's forces blocked the road in March TA 3019, Ghân-buri-Ghân offered the Rohirrim the Stonewain Valley, an overgrown cart road once used to quarry stone, in exchange for being left in peace.
The Riders came out of the hills behind the enemy and reached the Pelennor in time to charge at dawn. After the war King Elessar granted the wood to the Drúedain for ever and forbade anyone to enter it without their leave.
