The confluence sits well southeast of the Lonely Mountain, where the Carnen coming down from the Iron Hills meets the Celduin flowing out of the Long Lake. From that point one river continues south toward the Sea of Rhun, with the plains of Rhovanion to the west and the lands of Rhun to the east.
The Appendices count the country between the Celduin and the Carnen among the territories held by Gondor in the days of its greatest reach, when the kings of the South pushed their eastern frontier past Mirkwood. That claim did not survive the Wainrider wars and the Great Plague.
For the Men of Dale and Lake-town the junction mattered as trade. Goods moving south from the Long Lake and dwarf-work coming out of the Iron Hills met here before continuing to the eastern markets, and Dorwinion's wine came back the same way.
