The Long Lake is a narrow stretch of deep water running north to south, fed by the Forest River coming out of Mirkwood and by the River Running from Erebor, and drained south by the Celduin toward Rhun. On the map it sits between the northeastern corner of Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain.
The barrels from Thranduil's cellars floated across it to the town's docks, with Bilbo riding on top and the dwarves inside. From the water Bilbo first saw Erebor standing dark at the head of the valley.
When Smaug fell from the sky with Bard's arrow in him, he crashed into the lake and smashed the town's ruins. People afterward would not go near that part of the water. In calm weather the old piles of the drowned town could still be seen, along with the dragon's bones.
