Mount Gram sits in the broken highlands that Angmar once held, west of the main line of the Misty Mountains and north of the Ettenmoors. After the Witch-king's realm was destroyed, orcs and goblins filtered back into these hills and used them as bases for raids south and west.
Its one appearance in the story comes through The Hobbit. In TA 2747 Golfimbul of Mount Gram brought a goblin army into the northern Shire. Bandobras Took, called the Bullroarer, gathered hobbits and met them at Greenfields in the Northfarthing. He rode down Golfimbul and, the tale says, knocked his head clean off into a rabbit hole, which is how the game of golf is supposed to have been invented.
The battle mattered more than the joke suggests. It was the only fighting inside the borders of the Shire for centuries, and it kept the goblin threat out of the west until Angmar's old lands were quiet again.
