Grey Mountains

The Ered Mithrin form the northern wall of the map's wild country. They run west toward the head of the Misty Mountains, where the springs of the Anduin rise, and east toward the Withered Heath and the empty lands north of Erebor. Mirkwood begins south of them, and the Forodwaith and the northern ice lie beyond.

Dwarves moved here from Erebor in TA 2210 because the ore was good, and for several generations most of Durin's folk lived in the Grey Mountains rather than the Lonely Mountain. Their wealth grew and so did the attention of the dragons that bred in the waste to the east.

The attacks came steadily until TA 2589, when a great cold-drake killed King Dain I and his son Fror outside their own doors. Thror led one group back to Erebor and Gror took another east to found the Iron Hills. The mountains were abandoned to the dragons.

The upper valleys on the western side, along the Greylin and the Langwell, were the home of the Eothéod before they rode south to become the Rohirrim. Framsburg is marked at that river junction. The cold-drake Scatha, killed by Fram of the Eothéod, was one of the dragons of these mountains, and a horn from its hoard passed down in Rohan until Eowyn gave it to Merry.

   Thorin I left Erebor and led most of Durin's folk north to the Grey Mountains for their ore.

2. TA 2589 · Appendices

   Dain I is killed

   A cold-drake killed the King and his son at their doors, and the Dwarves left the Grey Mountains for Erebor and the Iron Hills.
