On the map the Anduin runs south past Pelargir and then splits, spreading into a fan of channels that empty into the Bay of Belfalas. The name means Outflow of Anduin, and the delta separates Lebennin on the west from the disputed ground of Harondor on the east.
The delta was navigable but treacherous, and it gave Gondor both a trade route and a permanent weakness. Every Corsair raid on the inner realm came up through these channels, which is why Pelargir above them mattered so much.
In March TA 3019 the Corsair fleet passed through the Ethir on its way to Pelargir, and the same ships came back down and up again under Aragorn's command, carrying men of the southern fiefs to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
