Eregion

Eregion occupies the corner of Eriador closest to Moria: south of Rivendell, west of the Redhorn and the Doors of Durin, on the high ground above the sources of the Glanduin. Men call it Hollin because of the holly trees that still grow there, and they are almost all that is left to see.

Noldor founded the realm in SA 750 and built their city, Ost-in-Edhil. Its smiths were the best in Middle-earth, led by Celebrimbor, grandson of Fëanor, and they had an alliance with the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm across the mountains that nothing else in the histories matches: Celebrimbor and Narvi together made the Doors of Durin, and both put their names on them. Around SA 1200 a fair stranger calling himself Annatar, Lord of Gifts, came to Eregion and taught the smiths what they wanted to know. The Rings of Power were forged between SA 1500 and 1590, and the Three were made by Celebrimbor alone, after which Sauron made the One in secret and everything came apart.

War reached Eregion in SA 1697. Ost-in-Edhil was sacked, Celebrimbor was tortured for the whereabouts of the Three and killed, and his body was carried before Sauron's army as a standard. The Dwarves shut the gates of Moria, Elrond took the survivors north to found Rivendell, and Eregion was never resettled. The Fellowship crossed the holly country in January TA 3019, and Gandalf remarked that the land still remembered the Elves although the Elves were gone.

   Eregion destroyed

   Sauron's army sacked Ost-in-Edhil and killed Celebrimbor. Moria was shut, and Elrond withdrew north to found Imladris.
