Dol Amroth

On the map Dol Amroth is the walled city on the cape that juts south into the Bay of Belfalas, west of the mouths of Anduin and south of the Morthond vale. Its harbor faces the open sea, which made it Gondor's western naval strongpoint against Corsair raids out of Umbar. Its banner is a silver swan on blue, and its knights were the only mounted force of any size in Gondor outside the guard of Minas Tirith.

The city takes its name from Amroth, lord of Lórien, who was lost at sea off that coast in TA 1981 while waiting for Nimrodel. The princes traced their house back to a lord of Belfalas and claimed a strain of Elvish blood through the old haven at Edhellond nearby, and Legolas remarked on the sea-longing in Imrahil when they met.

Imrahil brought seven hundred armed men and a company of mounted knights to Minas Tirith before the siege, a small force compared with what the city needed but the best equipped of the fiefs. He fought on the Pelennor, took charge of the city when Denethor burned himself, and rode to the Black Gate with the Army of the West. His sister Finduilas had been Denethor's wife and the mother of Boromir and Faramir.
