Caras Galadhon

Caras Galadhon sits near the center of Lothlórien, between the Silverlode and the Anduin. The name means city of the trees. It is a hill enclosed by a green wall with a deep fosse, and the only entrance is a gate on the southern side. Inside, the mallorns grow taller than anywhere else in the wood, and the elves live on platforms called flets among the branches, linked by ladders and lit with lamps of silver, gold and green.

The Fellowship was brought here on 17 January TA 3019, after dark, and climbed to the highest flet of the greatest tree, where Celeborn and Galadriel rose to meet them. Galadriel looked at each of them in turn and put a choice in their minds, which Sam and Boromir found unsettling.

The company camped in a hollow near the fountain for the rest of their stay and heard the elves singing laments for Gandalf. In a garden dell below the city Galadriel kept her Mirror, a basin she filled from a stream for Frodo and Sam to look into.
